Make Your Client LIKE You or Risk Wasting Your Time on the Audit!

By Andy Kovacs
(5-Minute Read)

The best internal auditors are almost always those who create a rapport with their clients. When internal auditor’s behaviour is accusing or aggressive, they are far more likely to be met with resistance than when they treat findings as an opportunity to help accomplish objectives and facilitate improvement.

– Richard Chamber (IIA President & CEO)

“It’s not a bloody popularity contest!”

Here’s a question for you:

  • Do your clients like you?

When I first started to design and deliver communication development learning programmes for internal audit teams around 20 years ago, this question was invariably met with puzzled expressions when I asked it.

“It’s not a bloody popularity contest!” they would scoff.

People say ‘Yes!’ to the offers of those who they like (and ‘No!’ to the offers of those they dislike, even if it is in their best interests to accept the offer)

While I don’t disagree, I have always insisted that getting your clients to like you should be a priority when it comes to your audit fieldwork conversations. Without such a rapport, your efforts will be greatly reduced.

This issue was touched upon by Richard Chambers, IIA president and CEO in the blog post: “5 Myths that Cloud Awareness About Internal Audit”. I wholeheartedly recommend that you read it – today (there’s a link at the end of this article).

I decided to write this article to make a case for the importance of getting your clients to like you as well as to offer some practical tips, which you can implement today, to help you achieve a liking-balance which will facilitate the success of your audit fieldwork by building a collaborative rapport with your client.

Having said that, I’m sure there are many of you sitting there thinking:

“But it’s NOT a bloody popularity contest!”

So first of all, here’s a philosophical thought experiment to show you that it had better not be a bloody UNPOPULARITY  contest!

Why should others CARE enough to follow YOU?

By Andy Kovacs
(1-Minute Read)

To motivate people to reach certain goals, you must engage their emotions; and the key to people’s hearts is story telling.”

– Robert McKee

No MOTIVATION, No ACTION!

How motivated are you to do things which you really don’t care about?

What if I were to tell you it was really important and that I wanted you to do it?

I’m guessing tasks like these don’t even make it on to the last page of your to-do list. At the end of the day, motivation is one of the 3 ingredients in getting people to act. And it’s incredibly difficult to summon up the motivation to do things we don’t care about.

But when I ask most leaders what their tried-and-tested tactics are for getting their stakeholders, peers and teams to care about what they’re asking them to do, I’m usually met with an awkward silence – followed by a statement like this:

“Well, I tell them that it’s really important and that I want them to do it.”

If this tactic doesn’t work on you (and I know it doesn’t work on me!); then I’m struggling to see how it would work on your people.

So how can you make others care enough to follow you?
